Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) has committed Shs20 million towards the 2026 Run for the Nile Marathon, reinforcing its focus on water stewardship and environmental protection.
In a statement issued on March 2, the brewer said the sponsorship will facilitate preparations for the fourth edition of the annual event, scheduled for March 28 at the Jinja Rugby Grounds in Jinja. Organisers anticipate more than 15,000 participants from Uganda and abroad to take part in the race, which promotes conservation of the River Nile and Lake Victoria.
The marathon is led by the Rotary Club of Jinja in collaboration with other Rotary clubs, combining sport with environmental advocacy.
While handing over the sponsorship cheque, Clare Asiimwe, NBL’s Corporate Affairs Manager, said sustainable water management remains integral to the company’s operations.
“At Nile Breweries Limited, water is at the heart of our business. Our commitment to environmental sustainability is therefore not optional — it is fundamental,” Asiimwe said. “We are pleased to contribute Shs20 million this year to strengthen efforts aimed at safeguarding Lake Victoria and the River Nile.”

Tomson Ofwono, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, noted that increasing urbanisation, industrial growth and agricultural runoff continue to degrade ecosystems within the Nile Basin, threatening livelihoods and water quality.
Funds raised from the run will support tree-planting drives, community clean-up campaigns and conservation awareness programmes targeting grassroots communities. Organisers say the initiative complements broader policy and legislative measures to address pollution, emphasising the need for active public participation to achieve lasting impact.
Participants can register for the 5km, 10km and 21km race categories at Shs30,000 per kit. The event will also feature exhibitions and interactive sessions highlighting waste management, pollution control and practical steps individuals can take to protect water resources.
Beyond the race, organisers plan to expand research collaborations and regional conservation partnerships to help improve water quality across the Nile Basin.
